Hot Topic: Primary Care & Behavioral Health Integration
In 2013, DMH Commissioner Marcia Fowler chaired the Behavioral Health Integration Task Force (BHTF), established by Chapter 224: An Act Improving the Quality of Health Care and Reducing Costs Through Increased Transparency, Efficiency and Innovation. The BHTF’s deliberations resulted in recommendations regarding strategies, concerns, and best practices for integrating behavioral health with primary care. With support from the Knowledge Center, the Children’s Behavioral Health Advisory Council advised the BHTF on the issues as they relate to children’s behavioral health and primary care integration. The Advisory Council drew from research literature, national experts, and their own professional experience to develop their recommendations.

The SAMHSA - HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions promotes the development of integrated primary and behavioral health services to better address the needs of individuals with mental health and substance use disorders, whether they are seen in behavioral health or primary care provider settings.
