Core Element Overview

Cultural beliefs, values, and traditions have a strong influence on all individuals and families. By respectfully learning about the experiences and cultural identities of the caregiver and other family members, the Family Partner can work more collaboratively and effectively with them. Often, this requires the Family Partner to examine their own values, past history, and potential biases so that they can avoid being judgmental. It is also important to explore the culture of the family’s neighborhood and community. Cultural awareness can help Family Partners clear up misunderstandings and make sure the voice of the caregiver is heard and respected in important decisions about their child’s needs.
