Risk and Safety: Prevention & Intervention

  • Plymouth Church 87 Edgell Road Framingham, MA, 01701 United States (map)

Presenter: Maureen Carville has 20+ years experience in the human services field including work in residential treatment, community based services and mobile crisis intervention.  She has endeavored to increase the safety of staff and persons served as Wayside’s Agency Risk Management Coordinator for the past 3 years.  Maureen serves as a Peer Reviewer for the Council on Accreditation (COA).

Description: Do you ever wonder why a family doesn’t use a safety plan in times of crisis?  Would you like families you serve to feel competent in managing situations so that everyone’s safety is maintained?  Participants in this workshop will learn strategies to engage families in the planning process, elements of a good safety plan, how to create “buy-in” and strategies to increase the use of safety plans.

As human service professionals, we are bound to be confronted with an escalated client or situation in the course of our work with individuals and families.  Our response can prevent crisis or can further escalate a situation.   Participants will learn variables to consider when assessing risk as well as de-escalation techniques that maintain or increase therapeutic rapport and facilitate growth.  This interactive workshop will provide participants opportunities to discuss actual risk situations and to problem solve around how best to handle them.
