The Trauma Center is excited to announce its Sixth Annual Summer Training Institute! Conducted by Senior Faculty of the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute, this intensive program undertakes a depth exploration of the complexity of adaptation to trauma, cutting edge interventions, and integrative approaches to healing for impacted children and adults. The setting for this Summer Institute was carefully chosen to provide an elegant training environment rich in both conference offerings and vacation amenities and conveniences, while offering an inviting and informal atmosphere more conducive to ongoing dialogue and meaningful connection with our senior faculty than possible in traditional conference formats. Registration for the 2017 conference will be limited to approximately 100 participants to preserve the individual access to conference faculty and the intimate, relaxed feel that have become distinctive features of this annual event.

CONFERENCE DETAILS

On Day 1Dr. Joseph Spinazzola, Director of the Summer Institute and Executive Director of the Trauma Center, establishes the frame for the entire conference with through a unique exploration of the Complexity of Adaptation to Trauma. This presentation utilizes an evolving, non-linear and participant-influenced structure to assemble a mosaic of neuroscientific research, evocative case material and traumatic stress lore.

On Days 2 & 3, participants select between two clinical intervention tracks:

  • In Track A, we are delighted to have Dr. Margaret Blaustein, Director of the Trauma Center’s Training Division and internationally recognized expert in child traumatic stress, return to the Summer Institute to deliver a Two-Day Basic Training of her heavily in-demand Attachment, Regulation & Competency (ARC) intervention for children and families impacted by complex developmental trauma.
  • Track B features two adult intervention models developed by the Trauma Center. On Tuesday, David Emerson, Director of our Yoga Services Program will engage participants in an experientially-rich, applied training on integration into adult psychotherapy of concepts, exercises and techniques from our National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP)-listed Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) model. Then on Wednesday, our Director of Training, Dr. Jana Pressley, will deliver a fascinating training on the intersection of complex trauma and spirituality in adult treatment that builds upon our Center’s adult complex trauma treatment model, Component-Based Psychotherapy (CBP).

On Day 4, we are excited to offer participants the choice between two highly innovative interventions developed by our organization that are being offered for the first time at the Summer Institute.

  • In Track ADr. Spinazzola, along with members of the JRI ensemble, will immerse participants in a fully experiential introduction to our Center’s Trauma Drama intervention model.
  • In Track B, we welcome our colleague, Dr. Julie Brown, to the Summer Institute for the first time. Dr. Brown will introduce participants to her Skills System for improvement of self-regulation and executive functioning in traumatized adolescents and adults presenting with cognitive challenges.

Finally, on Day 5, we are thrilled to conclude the conference with a first-of-its-kind presentation by Dr. Richard Schwartz, founder of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model for working with and integrating dissociated “parts” of self. Dr. Schwartz will engage participants in an exploration of lessons learned from IFS about Advancing Couples and Family Therapy. Moreover, he will partner with members of the Trauma Drama ensemble to demonstrate for the first time in his career a live enactment and unscripted, real-time intervention response to a family therapy trauma case utilizing the IFS model.

In all, we anticipate the Sixth Anniversary of our Summer Training Institute to be the most clinically diverse and sophisticated one yet!
